Chemical Storage Room Safety: Ventilation, Containment, and PPE Requirements
The chemical storage room behind a laundry's dosing system handles concentrated alkalis, oxidisers, and acids side by side, and a design that treats it as a supply cupboard rather than a hazard area is where serious incidents originate.
Published July 6, 2026 — Stalwart Engineering Technical NotesA laundry chemical room typically holds concentrated alkaline builders, chlorine or peroxide-based bleach, acidic souring agents, and various surfactant and specialty additives in the same space, and several of those categories are chemically incompatible if they mix, whether through a spill, a failed containment, or simple mis-storage next to each other. Alkalis and acids neutralise with heat and potential splash risk; chlorine-based bleach mixed with an acidic sour agent releases chlorine gas; and none of this requires unusual carelessness to occur, only ordinary storage decisions made without segregation in mind.
Segregation by chemical class
The baseline rule is physical separation between oxidisers, acids, and alkalis, either by distance within the room or by a containment bund between storage areas, sufficient that a leak or spill from one drum cannot reach and react with another. This applies to bulk day-tanks as much as to smaller containers; a room designed with day-tank piping for bulk chemical storage needs the same segregation logic extended into the piping and tank layout, not just the drum storage area, since a tank overflow behaves the same as a spilled drum if two incompatible tanks share a containment bund.
Secondary containment sizing
Secondary containment, typically a raised bund or containment pallet under each chemical category, should hold at minimum the volume of the single largest container stored in that area, the standard applied in most chemical safety codes and reflected in guidance such as that maintained by OSHA hazardous chemical storage and PPE standards, so that a single container failure cannot overflow the containment even before anyone responds. Containment sized only for a fraction of the largest container, a common cost-cutting shortfall in older installations, defeats the purpose the first time a full drum fails rather than a partial one.
Ventilation rate and monitoring
Mechanical ventilation in a chemical storage room needs a minimum air change rate sufficient to clear a foreseeable vapor release before it reaches a hazardous concentration, not simply the general ventilation rate applied to the rest of the plant, and rooms storing chlorine-based products in volume increasingly include a fixed chlorine gas detector wired to an alarm and, in larger installations, an automatic ventilation boost on detection. Retrofitting detection into an older chemical room is a modest cost relative to the plant's overall equipment budget and is one of the more cost-effective safety upgrades available for a facility that has never had one.
PPE and emergency response equipment
Chemical-handling staff need PPE appropriate to the specific hazard, not a generic set assumed to cover everything, splash-rated eye protection and face shields for decanting concentrated bleach or acid, chemical-resistant gloves rated for the specific chemical class rather than general-purpose gloves, and an emergency eyewash and safety shower reachable within the code-mandated travel distance and time, typically ten seconds' unobstructed walk, from every point in the room where chemicals are handled. Staff training on what each PPE item is actually protecting against, rather than a one-time induction that treats all chemical handling as equivalent, measurably reduces incident rates in plants that have implemented it as an ongoing rather than one-off program.
Spill response kit and drill practice
A chemical room needs a spill response kit matched to what is actually stored there, an appropriate neutralising agent for acid and alkali spills, absorbent material rated for the specific chemical class rather than generic sawdust or sand, and disposal bags for contaminated absorbent, positioned inside or immediately adjacent to the room rather than in a general maintenance store elsewhere in the plant. A kit that exists on paper but has never been opened in a drill is a poor substitute for one staff have actually practised using, since the difference between a contained minor spill and an evacuation-triggering incident often comes down to how quickly the first person on scene recognises what has happened and reaches for the right material rather than the wrong one. A brief documented incident log, recording even minor spills and near-misses rather than only reportable incidents, gives a plant the pattern data needed to spot a recurring handling problem, a specific container prone to dripping, a decanting step staff routinely rush, before it produces a more serious event.
